Another Big Weekend

July 5, 2006 · 2 Comments

I know you are all worn out from the Independence Day Weekend, but don’t put away those folding lawn chairs yet! We have another big weekend coming up and it actually starts today.

Chalk DrawingToday downtown we have a couple of events going on. At 2 and 4 pm, local artist Mort McBain will conduct free classes on chalking techniques in the Downtown City Square. Technically, you had to register in advance to actually participate in the lessons, but I would think on a nice sunny July day nobody would mind too much if you looked over his shoulders to get a sneak preview of this weekend’s Chalkfest. But before we get to the Chalkfest there is still more.

At 6 pm tonight, The Concert on the Square will be in full swing. Or should I say full reggae? New Found Flavor, a Green Bay based reggae band will be bringing those island rythms to the 400 Block. If you want a sneak preview, take a look here at the band’s website.

If more traditional American music is your thing, you only have to wait one more day. As usual during the summer, the City Band will be performing Thursday evening starting at 7 pm in Marathon Park.

And this weekend you can look up or look down and still have fun. If you are into looking down, then Chalkfest is for you. Artists of all ages will converge on the square and cover the sidewalks there with wonderful works of art. You can watch them in action or simply come down at the end of the day and peruse what was created. Instructors from the CVA will also be helping kids of all ages create a mural for the event. Here are all the details.

Balloons! And as promised, if looking up is more your demeanor, check out the Balloon Glow and Rally events this weekend. On Friday night at 8pm there will be a Balloon Glow Event. If you are not familiar with this, they bring the hot air balloons out, and while they are tethered, light them up with the gas flames in the gloaming. Definitely a Kodak moment! On Saturday you have two chances to see them fly, at 6 am (oh my!) or 6 pm out at the Wausau Airport. Parking will probably not be much of an issue at the 6 am event, but you might want to head out pretty early for the evening lift off. To make it worth your while to get there early, The Flying Elvis Parachute Troop will be dropping in about 5 pm at the Airport. Food and other refreshements will be available out there, so you only need to bring your chairs or blankets.

All in all, just an average weekend around Camp Wausau! Enjoy!
